Heritage Walling & Fencing

Heritage Walling & Fencing trainees will learn specialist skills to restore and maintain the trackside dry stone walls and wrought iron and wire sheep fences, in order to preserve the historic character of the landscape.

Heritage Walling and Fencing trainees will be expected to complete a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Heritage Skills (construction) dry stone. They will work alongside a team of experienced dry stone wallers, heritage fencers, the line side team and the Heritage Building Team, in order to gain the knowledge, skills and experience. There will also be training provided on site by our external trainer and assessor from ‘The Traditional Building Skills Co. Trainees will also be able to attend external masterclass training provided by the DSWA ‘The Dry Stone Walling Association’.

Units include:

  • Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace
  • Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
  • Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace
  • Working on Conservation and Restoration Projects in the Workplace
  • Conserving or Restoring Stonemasonry, Brickwork or Earthen Structures in the Workplace
  • Preparing and Mixing Lime Mortars in the Workplace
  • Building Dry Stone Structures in the Workplace
  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
